Chris in North Bay, Ontario provides another rare system, Sharp's HK-9000.
The detacheable speakers are wood, there's an LCD clock with a timer, and this
thing is heavy! We'd appreciate any information you have on when this model was
released, where, MSRP, etc. Thanks Chris!

Shawn provided a pic of this amazing Sharp with a spectrum analyzer! He's
partial to late '80s/early '90s models. He's also an avid seller of audio
and video stuff on eBay, so see what he's got for sale
here.

Do you prefer the original green leds or these slick blue ones? Yep, Shawn performed
a nice little hack to his box and replaced the LED spectrum analyzer. This is great! |

Panasonic's massive and loud RX-C300 had a spectrum analyzer too! Bailey in
Sydney emailed this gem found for $90AUS (what a bargain) and provides this information:
"it features a 4 band Tuner, (AM FM SW1 SW2) Phono Input, Aux Input & a Line Out.
It has a Single Auto Reverse Logic Controlled Cassette Deck w/ music search a 5 band Equalizer.
The Amplifier in it is the best i have seen yet in any portable unit, having 30W RMS
per channel (uses 2 Hybrid ICs whereas nearly all others use Monolithic
ICs like the BA,HA,LA,TDA series of output ics) which is coupled to the detatchable
3 way speakers 6.5" woofers + 2" tweeters that are in wooden boxes. The system break
to four pieces: speakers, amp and cassette unit." Thanks Bailey! |

Perhaps one of the most innovative (read: useless) boomboxes is Aiwa's CS-TW80. This
sleak little model from 1987 was equipped with AM/FM and TV sound, dual cassettes and two
RJ-45 jacks in the back. What for? For the telephone answering system, of course! That's
right, the CS-TW80 connected to your phone line to record incoming calls onto cassette. |

Jimmy in Montreal wandered into a pawn shop on a whim one evening and look what he found! This
is a relative to the notorious Conion C-100F, offering all of the bells and whistles of its predecessor in
a gray cabinet. |

Sharp was gutsy in their boombox experimentation, an example being the RX-990. The interface
in the bottom center is a keyboard! If you're an '80s synthesizer enthusiast, look for one of these
to make your collection complete. Thanks go to Rick in New Hampshire for providing a photo of this
exotic piece. |

Nestor in San Diego is the owner of this cool Toshiba. "The RT-SF5 is way cool.
It is feature laden despite the small size. It has an advanced, for its day,
autoreverse cassette mechanism with soft touch controls, a 4 band tuner with 2
shortwave bands and a fine tuning control. Metal and CRO2 tape capability, beat
and stereo wide, external microphone and aux high level source RCA jacks and a
two way speaker system with tiny piezo tweeters. It's all a very complete package,
and a boombox I am most likely to keep." |
